    LAZARUS PLAT MAP Finalized: Correction
Yesterday we ran what was supposed to have been the new plat map for Lazarus. Apparently we ran the Regional Map the boys at Griffin and Darnell Surveyors drew up last spring. A fine map indeed but not what we meant to run.

Here's the new Plat map for review. And don't shoot the messenger boys -- if you have a problem with the new property lines take it up with our town council. -- Aaron Critcher, Publisher

Anniversary of the Muskeegie Bank Robbery...
It was one year ago today that Mexican Bob and his gang robbed the Muskeegie Bank. And one year to the day when we lost the good Marshall, Wyler.

I have decided to rerun the story we ran the following morning covering that sad day to remind our readers of the heroes of that day. And to help spur the effort to bring Mexican Bob to jusice. -- Aaron Critcher

    MUSKEEGIE BANK ROBBED!!!
    MARSHALL WYLER GUNNED DOWN!!
    POSSE FORMED TO PURSUE BANDITS!!

The Muskeegie First National Bank was robbed shortly after noon yesterday by Mexican Bob and his gang of murderous cuththroats. Not since the infamous blood bath of the Morrison Stage Robbery of ’62 has the peace of Muskeegie been so utterly shattered.
After noticing suspicious activity outside the bank, Yarnel Pratt of Pratt’s Dry Goods alerted the Marshall nearly thwarting the robbers and saving the day.
“I see’d some strangers ride in. Real rough looking bunch. They was up to no good. I told my wife as much straight off. You could smell trouble on ‘em. They went in the Bucking Tiger Saloon and came out again several times. Nervous as a bunch of meal worms in a Chicken Coop. They were eye-ballin’ that Bank real good and checking out the Alley over by on Fillmore. When I see’d five of ‘em go into the Bank leavin’ one outside to hold the horses I knew I had to git on over and tell the Marshall right quick like.”
Once informed, Marshall Wyler drew his famous twelve gauge Greener and box of shells and made his way across the street to the Bank to investigate. He had barely made it midway across Main Street when he was gunned down in cold blood.
The Marshall managed to fire back before succumbing to his wounds killing the bandit and scatterin the gang’s get away horses.
Meanwhile, the gang inside had brutally pistol whipped teller Morgan Lance for not responding fast enough to their demands to open the safe. Another employee complied and handed over 1,700 dollars in gold coins and four hundred collars in Republican notes.
When they emerged from the Bank with the loot, the bandits learned their horses were gone and that several citizens were moving against them – having been alerted by the Marhsall’s shots.
Scattering like vermin the bandits attempted to escape as gunsmoke quickly filled the streets and alley ways. Two more were gunned down but unfortuanately Mexian Bob himself and two companions managed to steal some mounts and ride off with the bank money.
Deputy Assayer, Walter Snyder was wounded during the shoot out after bravely going face to face with Mexican Bob.
“I had that rascal cornered,” said Snyder from his bed as Doc Yancey tended to his wounds, “I was standing toe to toe with the man. He was scared. Real scared. You could see it in his eyes. I would’ve had him too but my Derringer jammed on me.”
Deputy Hollis formed a posse to go after the bandits. As of press time no word has been received on their

    Lazarus Plat Map Finalized
November 4, 1865 -- The Lazarus Town Council voted on the finalized version of the new plat map for the community yesterday.

Readers will recall a near riot broke out last month when it was announced property lines would be redrawn. Chaos during the early boom-weeks led to many lots being sold two or three times. Land right disuptes are still choking the town's beleaguered court.

Cuban Slave Revolts Pressure Confederate Emancipation
November 4, 1865 --The Confederate State of Cuba was rocked by state-wide slave revolts that resulted in destruction of this year’s sugar crop. The Confederacy’s upstart Nationalist party, lead by Senators Smythe and Pearson, both of Virginia, is pointing to these latest revolts as support for their Emancipation Platform. The Confederate Democratic party still holds a 2/3 margin in congress, but the Nationalist movement seems to be gaining momentum. Senator Johnston of South Carolina says “I WILL filibuster ‘til my dyin’ breath ‘fore I bear witness to an emancipation bill placed before the exalted congress of these Confederate States of America.” - Charles Rudder

RED SLEEVES WARNS OF TREATY VIOLATIONS
November 4, 1865 --The Apache (Chiricahua) war chief, Red Sleeves has issued a warning to white settlers bent on prospecting the lands west of the Animas River.

"Blood will be spilt" he was quoted as saying at recent talks at Roca De Galleon where he met with a Mexican delegation hoping to convince him to open up the territory he has kept a fast grip on. Tensions between the white settlements of Lazarus and Muskeegie have become increasingly strained in recent months since rumors of gold and silver in Chiricahua territory began running rampant.

    title or description

Mayor Gallagher of Lazarus called the threats "unsettling".

"We're sitting on a powder keg about to blow. And I'm at a loss on how to resolve it. Last thing we need is renewed hostility with the Apache."

A meeting in Muskeegie with representatives from local settlments had been called for the end of month prior to this most recent event. --- Aaron Critcher

New Partner at the Herald announced.
November 1, 1865 -- It is with the upmost pleasure that I announce, John W. Patterson has been admitted as a partner in the concern, and general conduct of this paper.

Mr. Patterson recently arrived in Muskeegie from St. Louis where he a strong voice and a forcible writer bravely questioning the conduct of city officials there and questioning the manner in which they carried about the business of the people.

He will now be bringing that voice to bear here in Muskeegie through the Herald. Besides his much needed backing he brings a wealth of experience and I look forward to working with him.

A dinner in his honor will be given after Sunday services behind the First Baptist Church. Everyone is invited. Readers are reminded of the Reverand's policy of no firearms on the Church grounds. A wagon with attendant for safe keeping will be on hand at the Becker's place nearby for those coming in from outside of town. -- Aaron Critcher

STAGE OVER TURNS -- TWO DEAD -- ONE MORTALLY WOUNDED..
    title or description

October 31, 1865 -- The Lazarus bound noon stage met with disaster yesterday when it overturned near Morman's Switch and tumbled down the banks of the Animas River and ended up half submerged in the watr.

Driver Marty Aims and his boxman, Frank 'Twitch' Ruben were killed instantly when crushed by the stage. Passenger Agatha Lewis was badly injured. The other four passengers are reported to be bruised and battered but in good health. Mrs. Lewis was on her way to Rancho Del Roca to visit her brother.

Based on a telegraph from the Lazarus station a wheel freed from its axle lead to the crash and not wreckless driving on the part of Mr. Aims as first reported. Details are still sketchy so the Herald is refraining from further comment until the facts are in.

The gold box and baggage was retrieved by a Riley freight wagon on its way to Lazarus and can be claimed there. -- Charles Rudder

    Huckbert-McGovern wedding held
October 31, 1865 --Porter Cain Huckbert and Lacy Sue Ellen McGovern were wed Saturday in a ceremony conducted by Pastor Adam Miles at the First Baptist Church of Muskeegie. The service was simple, yet elegant. The groom wore a black wool tailored suit and the bride wore a silk brocade dress imported from French Orleans. In attendance were the groom's aunt and uncle, Dale and Kelly Ann Huckbert, as well as the bride's family. The bride's father, ranch owner of the Bar None Ranch, Silas McGovern, gave her away. A reception was held at the Bar None Ranch, and was indeed a fine affair. Among the notables in attendance were Judge Gideon Wallach and bank president J. Edward Maass. -- Gracie Ann Wells

October 31, 1865 --There will be no Town Council Meeting this week. Eight of the ten members signed on for the posse that took after Jake Fletcher and his gang.

Sherrif Patch telegraphed from Lazarus yesterday morning to report that the posse had lost the gang's trail near Bent's Ford. The posse took on provisons at Lazarus and were making plans on doubling back to scour the switch backs on long the Aminas trail. - Aaron Critcher • Publisher
